Shortening and combining prayers while travelling

Ask a question

I travel three days a week for work, often 300–400 km each way. Should I shorten my prayers, and may I combine Zuhr with Asr when I am on the road and cannot stop?

The ruling in short

Once you leave the built-up limits of your city intending a journey of roughly 77–78 km or more, you become a musafir. From that point until you return, or until you form the intention to stay fifteen days or more in one place, you pray Zuhr, Asr and Isha as two rak'ah instead of four. Fajr and Maghrib are never shortened.

Shortening is not optional in the Hanafi school. It is the prescribed form of the prayer for a traveller, not a concession you may decline.

Three days a week at 300–400 km each way puts you well past the threshold on every one of those journeys.

Combining the two prayers

Praying Zuhr and Asr together at one time is permitted in the Hanafi school only at Arafah and Muzdalifah during Hajj. Outside those two places the prayers are prayed in their own times.

What is available to you is jam' suri, apparent combining. You delay Zuhr until the very end of its time and pray it there, then pray Asr at the very beginning of its time. Each prayer is still inside its own window, so nothing is displaced, but in practice you stop once instead of twice.

What this means on the road

  • Learn the end time of Zuhr and the start time of Asr for the route you drive. A prayer-time application set to your location will do this for you.
  • Pray on the ground wherever you can stop safely. A clean mat on any clean ground is sufficient.
  • If you genuinely cannot stop, you are on a moving train or a bus that will not halt, pray seated, facing the qiblah as best you can, and do not abandon the prayer.
  • A missed prayer is made up as it would have been prayed at the time it was missed: a prayer missed while travelling is made up as two rak'ah even after you reach home.

And Allah knows best.
